The greatest beer pong event in the history of the world took place a few weeks ago in Las Vegas, Nevada. The 3rd annual World Series of Beer Pong drew 300 of the best beer pong teams from the US and Canada to compete for the grand prize of $50,000.
MDBEERPONG was well represented with 14 teams, twelve of which won their way into the 3rd and final day of competition. As the final day eliminations progressed, the MDBEERPONG field was whittled down to only 4 teams.
The Octogon (PA Pongdaddy's) had a perfect first two days going 12-0 in the preliminaries. This was good enough for a #2 seed in the final 32-team, double elimination bracket. Unfortunately, they fell in the first round and were eliminated their next match against Shawn².
Speaking of Shawn², after a shaky first game loss in the preliminaries, the #1 ranked Maryland team was able to rattle off nine straight victories and finished the 2nd day with a 10-2 record, +28 cup differential, and a #18 ranking. This forced the Shawns to play into the 32-team final bracket with a best two out of three series with another hopeful team. In their play-in round, Shawn² easily dispatched their opponents in the first two games and advanced into the tourney. In the final tournament’s first round, Shawn² was defeated by Pure Filth, the eventual 3rd place finishers. This minor set-back did not discourage the top ranked Marylanders as they defeated their next three opponents including last year’s WSOBP champions, We Own You Face (video). Shawn² was finally defeated by last year’s 4th place team, Team Kobe, ending their WSOBP run with a 9th place finish.
Maryland’s 2007 State Champions, Wet Ballz, had an impressive run too. They entered the final day as the #26 ranked team with a 10-2 record. On the final day, Wet Ballz won their play-in series over Team Canada in dominant fashion. In the final tournament bracket, Jamie and Theo had all eyes on them as they took on the defending champs, We Own Your Face. Wet Ballz was victorious and they used this positive momentum to defeat their next opponents as well. It wasn’t until they ran into Pure Filth that they were sent into the loser’s bracket to face elimination. Wet Ballz finished along side Shawn² in 9th place.
The final MDBEERPONG team left in the competition was Dixie Normous. They finished the preliminary rounds in the same spot they were the previous year with an 11-1 record and a #4 ranking heading into the final day. Trying to avoid a repeat of last year’s disappointing 0-2 showing on the final day, Dixie Normous came out swinging and breezed through their first round match. The second round would not be as easy as Dixie was cast into the loser’s bracket with a loss to Viking Quest. The loss seemed to motivate Dixie Normous who went on a four game tear, winning each game with a 5-6 cup spread. It wasn’t until they met the eventual champions, Chauffeuring the Fat Kid, that their luck ended and their WSOBP run ended with a 5th place finish (video).
Congrats to Chauffeuring the Fat Kid who defeated the Iron Wizard Coalition in the finals. Although no Maryland teams took home any prize money, here's how we finished up:
