6/16/10: Atlantic City Championships Recap

It was a grueling few days in New Jersey as 26 of Maryland Beer Pong's finest took center stage and competed for a piece of the $50,000 prize pool at the Atlantic City Championships.

Several Maryland teams made quite an impact in the early going. Before the preliminaries even began, Shannon lost a tough overtime match to finish 4th in the Ladies 1-on-1 Tournament. On the male side, Mantis, Jordan, and Kyle all placed in the top 10 of their respective 1-on-1 tournaments.

In preliminary action, it was Projectile Dysfunction that led the way with a perfect 12-0 record and +55 cup differential which was good enough to land them a #2 ranking heading into the final day. Right behind them and also undefeated were McAllister (#6) and Double Tap (#8) . The highly anticipated debut of Change of Plans was an impressive one as they were able to win their first 11 games before dropping there final contest which dropped them to the preliminaries highest ranked 11-1 team (#12).

The final tournament was a 128-team, single elimination, with best 2-out-of-3 matches throughout. Many highly ranked Maryland teams lost prematurely while other rose to the occasion. Several finished in the top 32 including Projectile Dysfunction (17th), Double Tap (18th), and Change of Plans. Also in the top 32 were two underdogs that knocked off highly rated opponents in order to advance from the 2nd round. Who's In Your Mouth? defeated Mexicali and Serves You Right defeated the Usual Suspects.

Far and away the top MD performers of the tournament were the McAllister brothers who seemed invincible as they rolled into the final four. It appeared that McAllister had earned a spot in the finals as they left Drinkin' Smokin' Straight West Coastin with a 5 cup rebuttal which they needed to hit to avoid elimination. Unfortunately for the brothers from Carroll County, Mike Seivert (a.k.a. Sonoma Joe) hit all five which led to the eventual overtime loss for McAllister.

Here are the final standings for all the MDBP teams. Please help fill in any blanks as the final results have not yet been posted...

McAllister's performance this week in Atlantic City is definitely the best performance by a Maryland team on the national stage. They were a missed rebuttal away from a finals appearance where anything could have happened. All in all, Maryland performed relatively well considering the adverse conditions and level of competition at the event. I hope the record number of MDBP teams that made the trip to AC will make it to the WSOBP in January. If anyone has pictures or videos from the weekend that you would like to share, please send them to me. Until next time...

Comments:
Comment from Kyle Abel (6/17/10): SERVES YOU RIGHT- 70TH SEED, MADE IT TO 3RD ROUND TOP 32
Comment from Jeremy S. (Edited 6/17/10): She's not my wife 7-5, +3 CD, I think we finished about 140.
Comment from Bryan D. (6/17/10): L'eggo My Blue Eggo - 9-3 in prelims, seeded 73rd, got smoked in the tournament and finished Top 128
Comment from Austin Lanham (6/17/10): Just to clarify, seed refers to final tournament seed, not the number they assigned teams with to start the prelims. I'm pretty sure only the top 50 teams in WBPT's mind got seeded for prelims anyway.
Comment from Jeremy S. (6/17/10): Yeah they seeded their own top 50, and then starting at 51 they did alphabetically and then alternated session 1 or 2.
Comment from Tom C. (6/17/10): God Damn Brewery was 8-4, +17 CD. We finished 107 after prelims
Comment from Conor McKay (6/17/10): Team Extreme was 6-6, +1. No idea what our place was. We were 6-3, then shit the bed.
Comment from Jason D. (6/17/10): lol yea l'eggo my blue eggo was clutch the first day after a 4-3 start to end at 9-3 i felt good until we left the ball room at 2:10 am thats what im blaming our collapse on in the 2nd day lol shitted on
Comment from Trae M. (6/17/10): choked
Comment from Cory Ditzel (6/17/10): I have all 3 of McAllister's games in the rounds of 8 and 4 in stunning 720p HD. I'll get to uploading them when I'm at work tomorrow or Saturday since my connection speed at home is a FAIL.

Honeycomb in the final 8.... epic.
Comment from Earl Smith a.k.a. Bigdeal (6/17/10): me an steph get some credit for the wiym vs mexicali I got in those kids head it got to the point I was picking what cup they shot at I called the last 2 misses to end the game lmao
Comment from Jeremy S. (6/17/10): I think Mark from Mexicali might honestly be one of the nicest dudes in the world, but man Steph and Earl were givin' it to them during that game. AQUA-SOCKS!!!
Comment from Brian Rankin (6/17/10): C Banks finished 9-3 and was 48th in prelimns. Dunno about the cups tho.
Comment from Cory Ditzel (6/19/10): Alright, my short video collection is up. I donno if they're all done "processing", so the quality might not be the greatest yet.
